Flat layWhat Works on Etsy
Etsy isn't a pure white background marketplace. Handmade and vintage shops often do better with a warm, natural look: a garment laid on wood or linen, soft shadow, daylight colors. What matters most is that the first photo is clear and that your shop looks consistent in search and on your shop page.
The light wood and linen backgrounds here were made for that look. White and light gray are there too if your shop is more minimal.
Etsy Photo Basics
Size
Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 px on the shortest side. Every download here is 2048 px on the short edge.
Thumbnail crop
Search results show a cropped thumbnail. Standard or Loose padding keeps the whole garment visible when it's cropped.
More photos
Use the flat lay as your first photo, then add close-ups of fabric, tags and details, and a worn photo if you have one.
For Vintage Sellers
Buyers of vintage want to see the real condition. Keep the AI flat lay for your first photo, and add unedited photos of the label, the fabric and any wear or marks. Flat lays are also the easiest way to show measurements like pit to pit and length, which answer most buyer questions before they're asked.
Parts your photo doesn't show, like the back of the sleeves, are drawn by AI. Compare the result with the piece before you list it.
Etsy Photos FAQ
Which aspect ratio should I use for Etsy?
4:5 and 1:1 both work well. Pick one and use it for every listing so your shop page lines up.
Can I use these images on Etsy?
Yes, as long as you have the rights to the photo you uploaded and the image shows the item you're selling. Always check the result against the real item.
Can I turn off the shadow?
Yes. Untick "Soft shadow under the garment" before you create the image.
Does it work for handmade knitwear?
Yes. The knit texture is kept from your photo. For the sharpest texture, upload a well-lit photo at least 800 px on the short side.
